Preview: Upcoming Marvel and DC Movies of 2019

Marvel and DC Comic fans have always been enthusiastic about new movie ideas or trailers. People see their favorite characters in theaters, and fans are able to feel as if they were in the characters' world.  During the end of 2018 and into 2019, the company's Marvel Studios and DC Films have released trailers for their future films.  The Maroon and Gray looks ahead to review some of the upcoming movies of 2019.

The End of an Era for Chanel

Karl Lagerfeld was a very high-end, well respected fashion designer. It is suspected that Lagerfeld was born on the date September 10, 1938 in Hamburg, Germany. He never made his birthday public knowledge, but this is what people speculate. From a young age, he was interested in fashion and all things glamorous. As quoted in a recent article published by Vogue, Lagerfeld said, “When I was four, I asked my mom for a valet for my birthday.” At the young age of 14, he moved to Paris to enter a fashion competition.

The Voice just concluded another exciting season with its 15th winner.  Many fan favorites were eliminated throughout the season like DeAndre Nico, MaKenzie Thomas, and Sandy Redd, but at the end, the popular competition television show was ready to pick a winner among the four contestants.

Due to the NHS auditorium repairs, the NHS Yuletide concert was moved to after the holidays. It took place on Wednesday night, January 16. In many ways, the timing took pressure away from an already busy season and gave parents, community members, and students something to look forward to during this cold, dreary January.

NHS Students Shine Under the Bright Cabaret Lights

On January 11, 2019, Nutley High School held its third annual Cabaret Night. Since it began in 2017, the event has allowed students to showcase their musical talents for friends and family. In addition to musical theater, this year, Cabaret Night also welcomed in the theatrical talent of Nutley High School’s Thespian Honors Society.

Netflix Original Movie Bird Box Left 2018 With a Bang: A Review

 

At the conclusion to 2018, Netflix presented its viewers with a riveting sci-fi thriller, Bird Box. Netflix released the movie on December 13, 2018, with just a few weeks left of 2018. The thriller pushes things to the extreme, conjuring some kind of mysterious force, which causes people to go insane if they chose to open their eyes. Remember A Quiet Place? Bird Box is similar to it, but this time the characters can talk.

Nutley Students are Digitally Distracted

On January 29, 2019, the John H. Walker Middle School counselors will bring in Tom Kersting to present parents and students with his program, Digitally Distracted. This program is directed towards the JHWMS families, but encouraged to everyone in the Nutley district. Mrs. Alisa Gennace, the 7th grade counselor, was offered this program in her son’s school district and, as a counselor, she felt this was perfect for JHWMS. Digitally Distracted is a project, led by Kersting, which attempts to reconnect students with the real world and avoid increased screen time.

Everyone is Going "Off The Deep End" for A Star is Born

Lady Gaga’s has enjoyed fame for more than a decade, but her new movie, A Star is Born with Bradley Cooper, has gone off the charts. Lady Gaga has been a fashion icon and singing sensation since her career began. Acting is just the cherry on top of her career. This movie is not only an emotional rollercoaster, but Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga give outstanding performances.

 

Every remake of this film has its own unique touch, but Cooper’s directing of it brought many personal approaches and showed different sides of the story.

NHS Drama Club Production 2019 Newsies

Mr.Gurrieri and the NHS drama club are back again this year, performing the hit broadway musical Newsies. Newsies is a story about working hard for what you deserve, and takes place in industrial New York in 1889.  A group of poor paper boys are fed up with the big newspaper companies because they raised the prices per paper. Those paper boys take action by going on strike even though it means giving up what little income they had.  The NHS performances will be held on March 8, 9, and 10 of 2019.

Ariana Grande achieved her first number one hit on the top 100 Billboard.  Her album, Sweetener, hit the top of the charts this September. In addition, her new song, “Thank U, Next,” skyrocketed to the top of the charts within days of its release. It has more than 125 million views online.  The song was rated as the top-selling, and top-streamed song of the week.

Roll Out the Red Carpet

The votes are in and the people have spoken. Sunday, November 11, stars from across the entertainment industry attended the 44th People’s Choice Awards in Santa Monica, California. Nicki Minaj opened the event with a performance off her most recent album, "Queen." John Legend and Rita Ora also performed. The event featured 43 categories in total, which was broken down to 16 television categories, 10 movie categories, nine music categories, and eight pop culture categories.

The North Pole Visits Nutley

On Friday, November 23, 2018, Nutley residents poured into the Oval for Santa’s annual arrival. The Nutley Chamber of Commerce has hosted this popular event for the past 57 years and they hope to carry the tradition of making children and families happy during the holiday season. As usual, Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived in a helicopter exciting all the anxious children and they continued to make them smile while walking around meeting them. There was free hot chocolate, prizes, and lots of entertainment for the Nutley families.

NHS Marching Band's Winning Start to Their Successful Season

On September 22, 2018, Nutley High School’s Marching Band won first place in two competitions. The Marching Band went to Montville Township High School and Lenape Valley Regional High School and won with the scores of 79.350 and 78.250. These first two competitions have lead the Marching Band to a winning streak. The band has many members ranging from freshmen to seniors who all work together to string together high-end performances.

Every year, fashion trends are discarded, recycled, and invented on the runway. Each passing season makes room for different variations and interpretations of an established style. Fall is widely recognized as the season of earthy colors, scarves, flannels, sweatshirts and beanies. Just like each fashion season before, 2018 has added a new take on what is popular for this year, and revived some popular styles from previous decades. This list discusses the trends that have either become iconic this year, or had been carried over from 2017 .

NHS Indoor Percussion is Here to Make a Statement

The Nutley High School Indoor Percussion ensemble is preparing to start their third season this November. Despite the group’s short life span, they are no stranger to success. After taking the first place title in the Regional A division at the US Bands Championships in April with their show “Toxicity,” they have a big reputation to live up to for this upcoming competition season in winter 2019.

Inspiring the Minds of Young Adults

Two NHS Students Have Art Work on Display

 

The Inspiring Minds Art Exhibit, managed by Linda Beard and held at the South Orange Performing Arts Center, is an art exhibition that celebrates and advertises the work of young artists in Essex County. A student signs up, posts three pieces, gives information about the piece such size, medium and price (if the student wishes to sell) and the judges of the program choose what pieces to display for the duration of the gallery.

NHS Makes Sure "Every Day Counts" with Comic

The "Every Day Counts" Committee at Nutley High School has helped to promote the NHS "Every Day Counts" Campaign created by Mrs. Jackie Devore, a NHS vice principal. The committee created posters that were hung around the school, and created, printed, and sold tee-shirts with the slogan, "Miss School, Miss Out."

 

The group, consisting of NHS students Robert Nyakairu, Justin Rosario, Sean Mendoza, and Fernando Filian, created this comic for the campaign.
