Boygenius Takes a Break From The Spotlight

American indie supergroup Boygenius announced an indefinite hiatus at a secret show in Los Angeles on February 1, 2024. “We’re going away for the foreseeable future,” they reportedly told the crowd, and fans everywhere couldn’t be more devastated.

Comprised of acclaimed singer-songwriters and close friends Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker, Boygenius is an American alt-rock supergroup that debuted their self-titled EP on October 26th, 2018. Five years later, on March 31st, 2023, The Record was released, containing their most listened-to single, “Not Strong Enough”, which would win the singers three Grammy Awards.

Boygenius has rapidly overtaken the world of Alternative/Indie music, and judging by the amount of attention they’ve garnered and the loyalty of their fanbase, it's clear that their popularity can only continue to skyrocket. So, when Dacus declared, “This is our last show, and we’re feeling it,” during their aforementioned secret show, fans were left shocked, confused, sobbing, and most of all, wondering, "Why?”

In the winner’s room of the Annual Grammy Awards, Bridgers addressed the hiatus: “This is funny because I guess we just didn’t tell anybody, but we told each other at the beginning of this project that it will have a finite date, like a finite amount of time devoted to it. And we completed that time, and now we’ve walked into the sunset.”

Baker continues, “It feels nice to have a cap on what we’ve done, we put The Record into the world and that’s enough.”

“That’s why we’ve been showing up and working so hard,” Dacus added. “We knew that we didn’t have to sustain it and that this was our chance, so we’re glad we took it.”

Although the supergroup confirmed that there is no slated date for a reunion, in the meantime, fans can still look forward to the release of new solo music by the individual artists. In the words of Dacus’ recent Instagram post reflecting on the group’s success and the support of fans worldwide, “We’ll be missing you. Long live Boygenius.”
