Close to 400 students, parents and staff members came out on February 4, for dinner and a movie at NHS. In partnership with the Nutley Educational Foundation, the District presented a screening of the documentary LIKE, focusing on the perils of social media and the impact of technology on our lives. A panel discussion followed with NHS students, staff members as well as key members from our community.

On January 18, 2020, Nutley faced a tragedy like no other. Amanda Russo, 29, and her 7 year-old son, Danny, were victims of a deadly house fire on Park St. in Nutley, NJ. The house set on fire on a Saturday afternoon leaving the 74-year old grandfather injured and grieving.
On Sunday January 26, 2020 at approximately 9:00 am PST there was very dense fog in the air in Orange County, CA. Because of these weather conditions, the Los Angeles Police Department grounded all aircrafts until the afternoon. Retired NBA player, Kobe Bryant and eight others, including his 13- year-old daughter, Gianna, took off in Bryant’s private helicopter, Sikorsky S-76B, from John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California.

As the year comes to a close, American citizens await to see what next year’s election has in store. The 2020 election, however, is one that is very out of the ordinary. The current President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, was just formally impeached on Wednesday, December 18, a process enacted by the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi.
Black Friday in Nutley is not only considered the day for crazy shoppers and sales, but a day where families and friends come together to welcome Santa and Mrs. Claus as they arrive at the Nutley Park Oval. As the tradition continues for its 58th year, on November 29th Mr. and Mrs. Claus flew in on their helicopter onto the Oval to meet and take pictures with the children to kick off the holiday season. Santa’s arrival is enjoyed by the Nutley community as families come to share the experience of such a unique yet traditional event in Nutley.
On November 21, 2019, representatives from 12 colleges and universities came to Nutley High School for Instant Decision Day. Instant Decision Day gives students the opportunity to meet with college admission representatives who hold a short interview with them. Once the student’s application was reviewed, they received an instant admission decision. NHS students came to school dressed professionally, ready for their interviews.

It’s only around eight calories per cup, so it’s no wonder this lettuce is popular. It’s great for diets and low in carbohydrates and sugar. And even better, it tastes good.
Early this December, Typhoon Kammuri struck Central Philippines and their most populous island, Luzon. It is the 20th storm of the typhoon season to hit the Philippines this year, so to Philippines locals, this is just routine. The typhoon season starts in the middle of May and runs until the end of the year. Local Filipino names are given to each storm. This one is called Kammuri.
In the last decade, Tesla has completely disrupted the automotive industry. The company has been synonymous with the term electric vehicles, and rightfully so. Their vehicles boast completely battery-powered cars, with ludicrous speeds and technology. The company currently offers four flagship cars, the Model S, 3, X, and Y, each with self-driving capabilities. Combined, Tesla has changed the way consumers look and buy sedans, SUVs, and sports cars.
Over the past year and a half, TikTok has become the defining social media app of Gen Z, not only in the U.S. but around the world in places like India and Europe. The app allows anyone to post videos up to 60 seconds and easily lets users use their favorite song or audio. Though it originated as Musical.ly, a nearly identical app, in 2017 the Chinese internet company ByteDance bought the app and relaunched it as TikTok, with all Musical.ly accounts migrating over to TikTok in August 2018.
Turkey and Syria’s history is longer than the recent turbulence in which Turkey invaded Syria. The main reason for the Turkey's invasion was the country trying to force ISIS out of the land along with another group that the United States considers to be a terrorist group.
On September 25, 2019 New York City announced its new law concerning the New York City Human Rights Law. The law was created for the protection of immigrants located in New York. The law bans the use of certain words as well as certain scenarios that much of the immigrant population faces on a daily basis.
For several months, the streets of Hong Kong have been filled with protesters, sometimes in the hundreds of thousands, many wearing surgical masks and carrying umbrellas that have come to signify resistance. With several suicides, thousands of arrests, and even international debates, the Hong Kong Protests are a demonstration of the extent humans will go to fight for freedom.
President Trump has always faced opposition, since even before the 2016 election. The people of America have shown their opinion on Trump, whether opposition or approval, and both sides are strong and passionate. With the start of the President’s term in January 2017, America has become extremely divided. While many media outlets are quick to talk about the change of Trump’s cabinet members, or his visits to his golf course, no headlines have been as important as the ones in the news now. The House of Representatives is moving forward in an impeachment process.
In recent years, the use of social media among children and young adults around the world has been sky-rocketing as well as mental illness rates among the same age group. Like everything, there are benefits as well as drawbacks to social media. The most popular social media outlets are Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter. Teens spend hours on these applications which leads them to being at a higher risk of mental health disorders.
Vaping has become a deadly and serious issue in America's schools. According to a recent article in The New York Times, hundreds of cases of vaping have come out due to teens becoming sick and starting to die from mint and tooty fruity flavored nicotine products. Why are JUULs and e-cigarettes so popular among teenagers these days? At Nutley High School, vaping is a problem. NHS Principal, Mr. Williams says, “American teens are hooked on vaping.”
Every fall, the AP Program recognizes high school students who have demonstrated outstanding college-level achievement through their performance on multiple AP Exams.
Congratulations to current NHS seniors who receives the AP Scholar awards for them AP Program. These students received scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams.

During the week of July 28 to August 4, 2019, there were three mass shootings in the United States. These shootings took place in Gilroy, California, El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, leaving 34 people dead and dozens injured. People were going about their normal days before everything changed for them. After the tragedy that happened in Ohio, it marked the 251st mass shooting in 215 days. At the time, there were more shootings than days in the year.
