Every year, AP Government and Politics teacher Mr. Steven Digregorio invites Nutley’s Representative to talk to students about the issues that matter most. On May 29, 2019, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill took questions from both AP Government and AP Macroeconomic students in the NHS Media Center. She covered everything from the conflicts in Iran to impeaching President Trump, answering every question with detail and precision.
As you walk down the hallways, the students of Nutley High School act like every other stereotypical student; laughing, meeting around each other’s lockers, making plans for lunch. Yet, what may seem like the typical life of high schooler from the outside can actually hide crippling sadness and despair on the inside. As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, I thought it would be important to shine a light on a mental illness that impacts about 1.9 million children ages 3 through 17 in America.
Bad Teacher. Dead Poets Society. Mean Girls. High School Musical. Each of these movies has contributed to the societal view of teachers. Whether the teacher is supportive as Ms. Darbus in High School Musical or disinterested as Cameron Diaz’s Elizabeth in Bad Teacher, fictional teachers create false narratives of the real people who shape our lives at a young age and help mold us into the adults we become. Our real teachers put in countless extra hours outside of contracted time to ensure we excel in and out of the classroom.
On April 12, 2019 Nutley High School began its first-ever Day of Service. As the philanthropic aspect to NHS Games Day, Day of Service is a way for students to give back to their community while still competing for the end of year event. Students were given the entire day to volunteer around the area at Nutley Family Service Bureau, Mount Sinai Hospital, and with the Parks and Recreation department, or in another appropriate place to spend the day.
November 2020. Twenty months away and yet Presidential candidates on the Democratic side are gearing up to face President Trump in the 2020 election. At the time of publication, 13 Democrats announced that they are running for president. While they are all in the same party, each candidate brings their own views as to how they believe the country should be run and how to defeat the incumbent. After the 2016 election, many Democrats have moved to a more liberal view, fighting for universal healthcare or free tuition while some have rejected a move left and are staying moderate.
It is a well-known fact that we, as students, need some time to ourselves doing the things we love as a break from school. For some, it’s art or music. For others, it’s something physical. Rarely does our escape involve more work than the thing that causes us stress. But if you are committed to this activity, it’s not work, it’s fun. For 17-year-old NHS senior Vishva Rana, this is her exact situation. With a course load including five AP classes, Rana does have a full plate.
On January 11, 2019, Nutley High School held its third annual Cabaret Night. Since it began in 2017, the event has allowed students to showcase their musical talents for friends and family. In addition to musical theater, this year, Cabaret Night also welcomed in the theatrical talent of Nutley High School’s Thespian Honors Society.
“Congratulations! You’ve been accepted!” These are the words that many seniors were excited to hear on November 29th when Nutley High School held its annual Instant Decision Day. Every year, Nutley High School seniors have the opportunity to hear instant college decisions, which makes this day one of the most exciting on campus.
After the retirement of guidance counselor Dr. Mitchell this summer, Nutley High School gained its newest addition to the School Counseling Department, Mrs. Lauren Birnbaum. Her transition from John H. Walker Middle School has been well received as she meets with her new students and helps them prepare for life after high school. Recently, Mrs. Birnbaum met with students from the Nutley High School journalism class to talk about her new position at Nutley High School.
