At NHS, art students often fly under the radar. There are so many talented students in the art program that often do not receive recognition. One student who stands out is NHS National Art Honor Society Finance Secretary and lead Set Club painter, senior Anais St Amant.

All across the country, there have been countless mass shootings occurring in schools, malls, grocery stores, and churches in 2019 alone. On December 14, 2012, the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting occurred in Newtown, Connecticut. Sandy Hook Promise was founded by parents and loved ones who lost family members on that day. According to their website, their goal is to, “create a culture engaged in preventing shootings, violence, and other harmful acts in schools.”

Behind all of the flashing lights and loud music, there is a lot that goes into creating music and performing. Many people do not realize the time and energy most artists put into their music and especially their concerts. One artist in the rap industry tops them all: Travis Scott. There are countless headlines all over the internet calling him the best performer on earth, including in Rolling Stone. He really puts on a show. 

From January to August of 2019, there have been approximately 251 shootings in the United States, making it the country with the most shootings in the world. People all over are astonished and confused as to why this keeps happening and what the cause of it is. Some people blame it on video games, others mental health issues, and recently some have linked these shootings with white supremacy. 

It’s been said time and time again, but there really is nothing like New Jersey. Living here for 16 years, I’ve had the perks of experiencing things that people who aren’t around here find out-of-the ordinary, especially living in North Jersey. Here, we get the best of both worlds, the city and the beaches. Take a quick train ride to New York City? No problem. An hour drive to the shore? Easy. I always think to myself, “What would life be like if I didn’t live in New Jersey?” and I would, 100%, be a totally different person if I wasn’t from this beautiful state. 

If you ask almost any student in high school right now if they’ve ever owned an Instagram fan account for a celebrity, sports player or team, the answer would likely be yes. They probably would tell you that the account wasn’t gaining enough followers and likes so they stopped using that account and gave up on their dreams of their idol noticing them. For Jaron Kiviat, that most certainly is not the case. In April 2014, he created his account for the New York Mets on Instagram, NYM_NEWS. Now with 73.4K followers and counting, the senior in high school is thriving.

In its second year, the Nutley Trep$ Marketplace, where students showcased and sold their items, took place on April 26, 2019. Trep$ is a project-based learning program that teaches students from grades four through eight how to start their own business and also teaches them the skills needed for the future.

In 1989, the Fresh Perspectives exhibition began at the second largest museum in New Jersey, The Morris Museum. According to the museum’s website, this exhibit is, “an outlet for artistically-accomplished New Jersey high school students to express their curiosity and creativity.” In its 30th year, the exhibit features two Nutley High School seniors, Zawar Ahmed and Vishva Rana, and many other talented high school artists in New Jersey.

Ending on January 25, 2019 and lasting 35 days, making it the longest in US history, the US government shutdown has finally concluded. Over the course of these 35 days, there were many events that  occurred and many people were struggling and took a stand. People frequently ask: What was so bad that there needed to be a government shutdown for this long? The reason the shutdown occurred was because President Donald Trump didn’t get the funding he requested  to build the $5 billion border wall to separate the United States from Mexico. 

In December, Mrs. Meredith Gerckens, a Nutley High school counselor, was appointed to the position of Coordinator of School Counseling for grades Pre-K-12. As Coordinator of School Counseling, Mrs. Gerckens is in charge of the school counseling program in Nutley for all grades in the district, creating programs and services to benefit all students. She is responsible for designing a comprehensive district-wide program.
