On April 1, 2022, Nutley’s boys' volleyball team had their first game in Nutley High School history. The team defeated Immaculate Conception High School (25-14, 25-22). The varsity team consists of 16 players and is coached by Amy Gewecke and Kevin Reilly. The boy's volleyball team is a new program. So, the team has to do a lot of hard work to get ready for the season, “a lot of our preparation has been focused around getting our fundamentals sound and beginning to gel as a team on the court.,” said Gewecke. 

Football is a sport enjoyed by many people in the United States. People from all age ranges and genders enjoy it. Therefore, when Nutley introduced that they were making a girl's flag football team, some girls were ecstatic. "When I heard that flag football was becoming a sport for girls, I signed up,” NHS senior Mackenzie Albert said. Nutley was able to go through with adding a girl's flag football team due to the amount of interest they got. 

As NHS prepares for its spring baseball season, this is the beginning of the end for a lot of the players. With 12 of the returning players being seniors, this will be the last ride for the kids who grew up playing baseball together. Corner-infielder Daniel Reyes, shortstop and pitcher Joseph DeLanzo and pitcher Brian Conte all spoke about their experience in this program and what it has meant to them as well as their excitement for what is to come from this season.

The spring crew season is officially in full swing, as teammates come together to compete in practices and races everyday throughout the next three months. Crew is a high-impact sport that involves a lot of preparation, practice, dedication, and team efforts from both the members of the team as well as the group as a whole. This sport is only offered in high school, which means freshmen are just beginning to learn the ropes of it all. After speaking with a few freshman girls on the novice crew team, it is clear that this has not been an easy adjustment.

Wrestlemania, the showcase of the immortals. The most stupendous two-night event in sports entertainment. Over 80 thousand packed AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas to see the 38th annual Wrestlemania and it was one to watch.

Following the NCAA’s March Madness Selection Sunday show, Tom Brady surprised the whole National Football League (NFL) world by announcing he would be coming out of retirement for his 23rd season. Despite wanting to focus more of his time and attention towards his family and other businesses, he immediately started to second guess himself not even a week after his retirement.

Taking on a huge role isn't easy, but for Coach Mike Salvatelli, Nutley's newest head lacrosse coach it is a job he is ready and equipped for. The season started on Monday, March 7th and players and coaches are excited. This team will be the first to play under the new lights that will illuminate the Nutley Oval on April 6th. People are speculating this will be the largest lacrosse crowd Nutley has seen. 

After the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) won the 2015 Women’s World Cup 5-2 over Japan, soccer in women’s sports changed forever. This was a monumental win because the women faced many years of not being successful in their run of the tournament and had a lot to prove. Since this was such a major turning point in women's sports, this championship inspired the USWNT to create a friendly tournament of their own, the SheBelieves Cup. 

The 79 day wait for Major League Soccer fans all over the world has come to an end as M.L.S. is back for its 26th season in existence featuring young talent, new faces, and most importantly bitter rivalries. Nine months of passionate soccer being played amongst 28 teams across America was set to commence in 2022. From February 26th to February 27th, all teams loaded with talented young stars and battle-tested veterans returned to the field for nothing but 90 minutes of entertaining soccer. Arenas were sold out packed with M.L.S.

NCA, known as National Cheerleaders Association, is a huge cheerleading competition that is hosted in Dallas, Texas every year for many all star cheerleading teams. Varsity All Star produces this championship because it is a varsity spirit brand competition.

From the huge COVID outbreak, to some of the highest-scoring games in NHL history, and all the way into teams having to call up tons of AHL players, this season has had it all. And now that some of those events are in the past, many questions arise as the NHL approaches the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Did the Colorado Avalanche peak too early? Is the Rangers’ defense enough to give them a shot at the cup? Is new head coach Martin St. Louis the long-term answer for the Montreal Canadiens?

It is a very somber time for the National Football League (NFL)  as Tom Brady, the seven time Super Bowl champion and greatest quarterback of all times’ career has come to an end. On February 1, 2022, Brady announced that he will be retiring from the NFL. His 22-year NFL career was filled with some of the best moments in football history, and although it is difficult to leave this part of his life behind, he is ready for new beginnings. 

David Ortiz, also known as Big Papi, is a and will forever be a Boston legend. He has done so much on and off the field for the city; he was there when Boston needed him the most.

Boys' volleyball is the newest addition to the collection of sports at Nutley High School (NHS). The newly approved coaches consist of head coach Kevin Reilly and assistant coach Amy Gewecke who both previously coached during the girls' volleyball season. Tryouts will begin on Friday, March 11, and will run for about a week. Any male student from Nutley High School is eligible and encouraged to try out. The program will consist of a Junior Varsity and Varsity team.

Every year, there seems to be clear-cut favorites as to who will get their shot at becoming a Super Bowl champion. No one could have predicted what would happen with the NFL this year. Fans were left to see the Los Angeles Rams face the Cinncinati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI.

Throughout his several years of coaching in football’s toughest league, Brian Flores has had his fair share of ups and downs. Flores has lived the coaching dream. He has won countless titles, and learned from some of the best coaches in National Football League history. Little did the rest of the league know, things were about to have drastic changes. 

This coming spring, Nutley High School is doing something very different. There will be a girls' flag football team. The coaches are Mr. Porrino and Mr. Coppola, who both also coach for boys' football in the fall. This is a huge moment for Nutley because something like this has never happened before. Mr. Porrino is very excited to see “what kind of fan support we could have especially if we have Friday night games in the oval.” The flag football league was started by the New York Jets. They began this league last year, starting with only eight teams.

Monday, January 17th marked a very bittersweet night for the Nutley Columbia High School Hockey team, as they honored the graduating seniors from the Class of 2022. This entire season has been filled with a bundle of emotions, and every second of hard work they have put into the last four years is coming together now to showcase them one last time. 

Icon, Legend, Football. The phrase “once in a generation” seems to be tossed too often, far more often than it should be in sports, but when it came to John Madden, this couldn’t even begin to sum up what he represented. The bottom line is that Madden found something he loved and made it his life.

Steph Curry, Damian Lillard, and Luka Doncic are just a few of the top point guards currently in the National Basketball Association. One person that everyone seems to forget is Brooklyn Nets point guard Kyrie Irving. Kyrie Irving was the first overall selection in the 2011 draft and was born in Melbourne, Australia, but was raised in New Jersey. Kyrie Irving is only 29-years old and is in his 11th year in the league. Kyrie started off his career playing for the Clevland Cavaliers. Then after six years, he signed with the Boston Celtics.
