Seven time Super Bowl Champion Tom Brady announced his official retirement from the National Football League (NFL) on February 1, 2023, the same day he had retired a year earlier, before returning back to the NFL on March 13, 2022. Sophomore Kattie Guerrero said, “I’m actually very surprised he retired just because it seemed like he was never going to leave. I’m really sad, too. I’m a Cowboys fan but was always a huge Tom Brady fan especially when he was on the Patriots.” 

The Nutley High School program hosted its first ever all-girls wrestling match on Monday, January 30th. This event started at 6 p.m. and both Varsity and Junior Varsity teams participated. Presently, there are six girls on the team, but there have only been two female wrestlers prior to this year: senior Mariah Koster, who has been wrestling for the high school team since her freshman year, and junior Isabella Bobadilla who joined the team her sophomore year. 

Super Bowl Sunday is this weekend, and passionate NFL fans are ready to attend, and millions are ready to watch from around the world. Super Bowl LVII (57) is set for an electrifying showdown between two NFL heavyweights. It’s the first Super Bowl with two black quarterbacks and two brothers facing off for glory. The Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles will fight for the Vince Lombardi Trophy and submit themselves to NFL stardom.

The 6-3 football team from Nutley High School received support all season long from the cheerleading squad. With the season coming to an end, the cheerleaders shifted their goals and began to get ready for their competition season. The memories formed on the field during these games were emotional for several of these cheerleaders, 11 of whom were seniors, but the girls were excited to start their season after their victory at the Super Essex Conference back in October. 

Junior Brandon Toranzo was named New Jersey Athlete of the Week by The Observer after his outstanding wrestling performances in the Rahway Tournament and the Kearny Tournament. The Observer is a print and e-newspaper serving the communities of Kearny, Harrison, East Newark, North Arlington, Lyndhurst, Belleville, Bloomfield and Nutley.

It was a normal tackle, a normal hit, a normal moment in a big football game, one of the biggest of the season. A nationally televised Monday night matchup between the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals, two of the NFL’s hottest teams. Over 65,000 were packed into Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati ready to see a grudge match in primetime. What they witnessed, along with everyone on the field, was truly shocking. 

After weeks of the 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup tournament, the final took place on Sunday, December 18th. The two teams playing were the 2019 reigning World Cup Champions France, versus the international powerhouse Argentina. Both teams are made up of great players, but the two players to really watch out for were soon to be veteran soccer legend Lionel Messi from Argentina, and the up and coming superstar Kylian Mbappe from France.

Following the Group Stages of the FIFA World Cup was the Round of 16. In this section of the World Cup, there are a total of eight games, where each nation has one chance to advance to the quarter finals. During the quarter finals there will be a total of four games that dictate which four teams will be going to the semi finals. Finally, the two winners of the semi finals will advance to the finals and the two losers will go on to the match for third and fourth place. 

The Nutley High School Bowling team is back for another exciting year looking to prove their stellar record in 2021 wasn’t a fluke. That season, the Raiders competed in the SouthEastern Conference (SEC) American division, one of the strongest divisions in high school sports.

Senior Victoria Rutnik will be the first NHS hockey player to play for a Division 1 school when she joins Long Island University next Fall. Rutnik dedicates six hours a week to practice and currently plays for both the varsity boys' team and the NJ Colonials 19U AAA girls' team. 

The Fifa World Cup returned for the 22nd time in a span of 92 years and passionate supporters arrived in Qatar across various venues to see their squads compete in the world's biggest soccer tournament. Watch parties all over the world consisting of people who didn’t make the trip also had large gatherings to support their nation. The group stages kicked off on November 20 with 32 nations coming together, but only one can hoist the cup in December.

After a long series of qualifications for the World Cup, 32 international teams are set up for the group stage. There are eight different groups — Groups A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H — and four teams in each group. Each team is grouped depending on what seed they are ranked and play each other once, which accumulates to three total games. A win is worth three points, a tie is worth one point, and a loss is worth no points.

With wrestling season right around the corner, our Raider wrestlers have a lot to live up to and even more to look forward to. Following their rough season last year, a lot is expected of them on and off the mats. Coach Sabino Coppola said, “Last year we had a rough season; we had a whole lot of new wrestlers coming out for the team and had very light numbers. However, this year I think we will see a whole lot of improvement.”

Boys’ Ice Hockey is back and this winter should prove to be an electrifying year with passionate players hungry for a successful campaign. 

This winter, The Nutley Raiders girls’ basketball team is looking for a redemption-type season, considering they opted to move down a division. Last year, the Raiders competed in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) American division, one of the strongest in high school sports. 

Nutley High School’s Girl's Varsity Volleyball (NHSVB) team held their first home game of the season against Cedar Grove on October 3, 2022. The match started at 5:30 pm, following a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly renovated high school gym.

The Nutley Raiders senior football players, managers and cheerleaders held their Senior Night on Friday, October 6. The event kicked off at 6:00 p.m. with a rose ceremony honoring the student-athletes, where the families of the graduating Raiders were invited on the field and presented with the opportunity to hand their child a rose to signify their last hoorah as a Nutley Raider Varsity athlete. 

The varsity football team kicked off their 2022 season with an opening game against Bloomfield High on September 1. The new season came with illuminating questions revolving around the new head football coach, Joe Piro. Piro, presently Nutley High’s athletic director, is excited to take on this new role temporarily during the absence of Head Coach JD Vick.
