On May 4, 2022, the Nutley High School Special Education students competed in the Special Olympics, in Brookdale Park. This was such a special day for the students because they “were a part of a team,” Santino, one of the students, mentioned. These students are full of courage and strength, and they had a terrific time. This event is organized by the Special Olympics and is open to anyone interested in taking part.
Naomi Judd was a very famous country singer/songwriter and actress. She and her daughter Wynonna were known as the Grammy-winning duo, The Judds. Just recently, on April 30th, Judd took her own life after living 76 years. She had been battling the disease of mental illness for many years.
The 94th Annual Academy Awards was on March 27th, returning back to the Dolby Theater in Hollywood. This year the show was hosted by three people, including Amy Schumer, Regina Hall, and Wanda Sykes. This is the first time the Oscars have had multiple hosts since 2011.
The Screen Actors Guild Awards, also known as the SAG Awards was held on February 27, 2022. It honors actors with the best performances of the year. After having a shortened ceremony last year, they returned with a grand live one this year. This was the 28th year, making its debut in 1995. It has been a huge hit since then.
This coming spring, Nutley High School is doing something very different. There will be a girls' flag football team. The coaches are Mr. Porrino and Mr. Coppola, who both also coach for boys' football in the fall. This is a huge moment for Nutley because something like this has never happened before. Mr. Porrino is very excited to see “what kind of fan support we could have especially if we have Friday night games in the oval.” The flag football league was started by the New York Jets. They began this league last year, starting with only eight teams.
Ryan Depersio, NHS alumnus and popular local chef, grew up in Nutley and stayed here for most of his life until just recently moving, but still, remaining close. DePersio is a very well-known chef with three restaurants in the North Jersey area. His first restaurant, Fascino, which he opened at 25, is in Montclair. The other two are located in Jersey City - Battello and Kitchen Step.
Since 2019, the country and world have been dealing and battling with Covid-19. Now in 2022, Americans are still trying to figure out ways to stay safe from Covid-19, but specifically the new variant Omicron. This variant has been going through millions of people. Whether you have the vaccine or not, this variant can affect you.
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have been all the drama for the past year. The couple was married on May 24, 2014. Now they share four children. Kim announced she filed for divorce in February of 2021, however, it was a long coming. This whole year has been filled with lots of drama between the two -whether it’s Kanye trying to win Kim back or him making a commotion about her new love life.
The Nutley Department of Parks and Recreation has been having town productions for the past 20 years. Whether it is a Christmas show or a remake of a movie, the Nutley town plays are always a hit! The actors and actresses, backstage crew, stage manager, and all the other help, all work hours on end to try to make the productions the best they possibly could be. They will spend hours learning lines at home or hours together trying to rehearse.
Lori Loughlin decided it was finally time to return to acting since the college admissions scandal back in March of 2019. The college scandal she was involved in was a huge incident for a while and almost cost Loughlin her career.
