In the last decade, Tesla has completely disrupted the automotive industry. The company has been synonymous with the term electric vehicles, and rightfully so. Their vehicles boast completely battery-powered cars, with ludicrous speeds and technology. The company currently offers four flagship cars, the Model S, 3, X, and Y, each with self-driving capabilities. Combined, Tesla has changed the way consumers look and buy sedans, SUVs, and sports cars.
Over the past year and a half, TikTok has become the defining social media app of Gen Z, not only in the U.S. but around the world in places like India and Europe. The app allows anyone to post videos up to 60 seconds and easily lets users use their favorite song or audio. Though it originated as Musical.ly, a nearly identical app, in 2017 the Chinese internet company ByteDance bought the app and relaunched it as TikTok, with all Musical.ly accounts migrating over to TikTok in August 2018.
Turkey and Syria’s history is longer than the recent turbulence in which Turkey invaded Syria. The main reason for the Turkey's invasion was the country trying to force ISIS out of the land along with another group that the United States considers to be a terrorist group.
On September 25, 2019 New York City announced its new law concerning the New York City Human Rights Law. The law was created for the protection of immigrants located in New York. The law bans the use of certain words as well as certain scenarios that much of the immigrant population faces on a daily basis.
For several months, the streets of Hong Kong have been filled with protesters, sometimes in the hundreds of thousands, many wearing surgical masks and carrying umbrellas that have come to signify resistance. With several suicides, thousands of arrests, and even international debates, the Hong Kong Protests are a demonstration of the extent humans will go to fight for freedom.
President Trump has always faced opposition, since even before the 2016 election. The people of America have shown their opinion on Trump, whether opposition or approval, and both sides are strong and passionate. With the start of the President’s term in January 2017, America has become extremely divided. While many media outlets are quick to talk about the change of Trump’s cabinet members, or his visits to his golf course, no headlines have been as important as the ones in the news now. The House of Representatives is moving forward in an impeachment process.
In recent years, the use of social media among children and young adults around the world has been sky-rocketing as well as mental illness rates among the same age group. Like everything, there are benefits as well as drawbacks to social media. The most popular social media outlets are Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter. Teens spend hours on these applications which leads them to being at a higher risk of mental health disorders.
Vaping has become a deadly and serious issue in America's schools. According to a recent article in The New York Times, hundreds of cases of vaping have come out due to teens becoming sick and starting to die from mint and tooty fruity flavored nicotine products. Why are JUULs and e-cigarettes so popular among teenagers these days? At Nutley High School, vaping is a problem. NHS Principal, Mr. Williams says, “American teens are hooked on vaping.”
Every fall, the AP Program recognizes high school students who have demonstrated outstanding college-level achievement through their performance on multiple AP Exams.

During the week of July 28 to August 4, 2019, there were three mass shootings in the United States. These shootings took place in Gilroy, California, El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, leaving 34 people dead and dozens injured. People were going about their normal days before everything changed for them. After the tragedy that happened in Ohio, it marked the 251st mass shooting in 215 days. At the time, there were more shootings than days in the year.
Throughout the month of August the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest faced thousands of fires that affected many plants, animals, and their ecosystems in the process. The Amazon Rainforest is the largest tropical rainforest in the world and contains 10% of the world’s biodiversity and 15% of its freshwater. In addition to that, it also contains 10% of earth’s animal population. With all that said, by the end of August there were 41, 858 fires which destroyed a portion of these vital aspects of the world.
From January to August of 2019, there have been approximately 251 shootings in the United States, making it the country with the most shootings in the world. People all over are astonished and confused as to why this keeps happening and what the cause of it is. Some people blame it on video games, others mental health issues, and recently some have linked these shootings with white supremacy.
Hurricane Dorian had a path of destruction. The hurricane ruined homes, caused deaths, and has been one of the most detrimental hurricanes in years to hit the Bahamas. The hurricane struck with winds reaching about 185 miles per hour, rated at a category five, on September 1, 2019.
In recent developments, largely sparked by the occurrence of protests outside of the VMAs that took place in New Jersey’s Prudential Center in August, awareness about Newark’s water crisis has come to light. The water was unsafe for consumption and bottles were passed out to citizens to use for their cooking, cleaning, drinking, and other needs. The fight to fix the problem is still ongoing.
On Monday, June 3rd, Jeopardy phenomenon James Holzhauer saw his journey come to a close. During his 33rd game, less than $60,000 away from beating the record set by Ken Jennings, another famous Jeopardy contestant, he was defeated by librarian Emma Boettcher. His unexpected loss came as a shock to Jeopardy viewers and set the internet on fire with articles and videos and blogs regarding his defeat. Win or lose, James has managed to catch the attention of the world with his incredible strategies and his prodigious intelligence.
In the last two decades, technology has completely changed the daily lives of most Americans. For example, with a push of a button, a person can come to where you are, drive you where you want to be, and you don’t even have to take out your wallet. With technology, certain privileges have become part of our lives.

On May 29, 2019, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill took questions from both AP Government and AP Macroeconomic students in the NHS Media Center. She covered everything from the conflicts in Iran to impeaching President Trump, answering every question with detail and precision.
On May 14, 2019, the state of Alabama made national headlines, stirring up controversy with their new bill that addressed one of the most sensitive topics in the country and likely during the 2020 Presidential election. The new bill would be the strictest policy on abortion in the country in decades. What many are calling a proposed “abortion ban” would essentially restrict all legal abortions in the state of Alabama with the exception of very specific circumstances.
Recently, the President of the United States,Donald J. Trump, went to New England on a political visit to discuss the country’s relationship with the United Kingdom and their military ties. The President spent three days in England: June 3rd, 4th, and 5th. This was the President's second visit to the UK since his term began, although the first also included a golf trip.

On June 30, people throughout the New York metropolitan area will gather on 5th Avenue in New York City for the annual Pride March. With explosions of color and sound, and thousands of diverse individuals, the march is a way for people in the LGBTQ+ community to be proud of who they are and celebrate their history. The New York City Pride March is one of the largest in the world, and just one event of thousands across the globe annually.
