28th Annual SAG Awards
The Screen Actors Guild Awards, also known as the SAG Awards was held on February 27, 2022. It honors actors with the best performances of the year. After having a shortened ceremony last year, they returned with a grand live one this year. This was the 28th year, making its debut in 1995. It has been a huge hit since then.
The SAG awards was a two-hour award show, live on TNT and TBS. This show brings lots of big celebrities out; some included Selena Gomez, Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper, Jessica Chastain, Vanessa Hudgens, and Will Smith. Selena Gomez actually went barefoot for the night! The heel of her black pumps broke while she was walking the red carpet.
Something different about the SAG awards this year were the COVID-19 protocols. Every person attending had to “show proof of their vaccination plus booster (if eligible) and proof of a negative COVID-19 test,” according to the New York Post. This did not go down without controversy. Actor, Forrie J. Smith did not attend the SAG awards because he was not vaccinated and wasn’t planning on it.
The extremely popular show this year, Squid Game won the Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series category. The main actor, Lee Jung-jae, also won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series. His co-star, Jung Ho-yeon, won the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series award. They made history by being the first Korean actors to win a SAG award. Squid Game was a huge show in 2021. People are excited about what’s to come next from them.
Micheal Keaton won an award for his acting in the show Dopesick. The show is about addiction; Keaton’s late nephew died from an overdose, which is why it hit so close to home. During his speech after receiving the award, he began to tear up talking about his nephew’s passing. He dedicated the award to his nephew and his sister, Pam. He took a moment to show support for the Ukrainians as well. Keaton’s speech was one of the most emotional of the night.
Dame Helen Mirren accepted the SAG Life Achievement Award, which is an award that honors an individual who shows the finest acting profession. According to the New York Post, this award will be added to Mirren’s “Oscar, Tony, multiple SAG, Emmy, and BAFTA Awards.” She is 78 years old and has been acting since she was very young. She has had 13 SAG nominations and has won five. During Mirren’s speech after receiving the award, she said, “It is you, you: actors, that I want to thank.” She continued on talking about the actors’ generosity, humor, intelligence, and energy. Winslet of Mirren said, “Her performances give us real human beings, unvarnished, untethered. She’s a privilege to watch.”
The SAG awards ended up being a really fun night for everyone who attended. All the actors and celebrities took lots of pictures and socialized the whole night. This night was even better for any of the actors who won an award.
