Barnes takes mystery to another level, with captivating twists and secrets, each one spiraling into betrayals and lies that will keep readers wanting more.
Barnes has been writing for years, having written her first five books while still in college and another six while working on her PhD in psychology at Yale University. In total, Barnes has written and published 22 books, another of her most known series beside The Naturals being The Inheritance Games.
Published in 2013, The Naturals, follows seventeen-year-old Cassie Hobbes, a regular teenage outcast with a talent for reading people. From what they’re wearing to the way they talk, Cassie can figure out who a person truly is in seconds. But when the FBI recruits Cassie to a secret program to help solve cold cases, she realizes she’s not the only teen out there with exceptional gifts. What starts out as solving cold cases, however, turns Cassie’s mere participation in the program into an active case. With a riveting storyline and action-packed conflict, The Naturals is great for any reader getting into the mystery/thriller genre.
The novel takes place in the present-day throughout the US, though mainly in Quantico, Virginia, where our five main characters reside for most of the series. Cassie’s ability makes her a “profiler”, a title that highlights Cassie’s ability to piece small details into who a person really is. Between a sarcastic emotion reader, a deceptive lie detector, an energetic statistician, and an enigmatic other profiler, Barnes sets the stage for drama and romance in this award winning novel.
The Naturals series is nothing short of a YA work of art. As a reader who’s never been into thriller or mystery novels, these books are sure to captivate a reader of any genre. Its never-ending twists and gripping storyline will keep readers on the edge of their seats, down to the very last pages. These books, short as they may seem, are packed with drama and topped with deceptively sweet endings that never leave the reader 100% satisfied. The series is a fan-favorite in the book community, and it’s easy to see why. This series owns a piece of my heart and mind, and I would give anything to read it again for the first time.
A general warning to all the people planning on reading this book: Don’t finish the first one without the second on-hand.
