Art Students Preparing for Upcoming Show

Students taking art classes are set to celebrate their annual Nutley High School Art Show on May 21 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the auxiliary gym, where students from grades 9 through 12 will showcase a range of unique pieces.

The event features artwork from all levels from introductory production classes to the advanced placement art program. Visitors can expect to see paintings, drawings, sculptures, printmaking, graphic design, photography, mixed media, fashion design, and interior design projects.

“This event is all about bringing the community together to celebrate the amazing, gifted, and talented students we have here at Nutley High School,” said art teacher Jessica Manley. “It’s also about raising awareness for the hard work and creativity our students put into their work.”

A highlight of the event is the chance for upperclassmen to personalize their own exhibit panels. Juniors receive a 4 ft by 4 ft panel while seniors have an 8 ft by 4 ft space to design and display their selected works.

Senior Xael Leon, whose portfolio mostly focuses on mixed media, painting, and illustration, shared how personal expression inspires her art. “Most of my work is based on emotions and experiences,” she said. “In my younger years, I didn’t think art was a viable career path. I saw it more as a side hustle. But as I progressed through high school, I realized it’s what I’m truly passionate about.” Xael, who will be attending Mason Gross School of the Arts, is participating in the show for the third and final time. “I’ve been looking forward to this all year. It’s really exciting knowing my friends and family will all be there.”

For sophomore Jomayli Duran, the show is a big moment. “This is the first time I’ve really gotten into art,” she said. “I’m super excited to show what I made, even if it's no Picasso." Her excitement shows how the art show can be a fun way for new artists to discover their creativity.

Originally this was a K-12 district wide event; the show was changed three years ago to focus  on high school students allowing more space and attention for high school-level work. “It gives us more opportunity to show off what’s happening in our classrooms here,” said Manley.

Whether you’re an art enthusiast, a friend or family member, the Nutley High School Art Show promises an inspiring evening filled with talent, creativity, and expression.
