DC’s Unreleased Films of 2019 and 2020
In the previous issue, the Maroon and Gray previewed some of the new movies from both Marvel and DC Comics. Now, the Maroon and Gray will provide a brief overview focusing on the few unreleased movies from DC Comics. These movies are set to be released in 2019 and 2020.
On October 4, 2019 The Joker is set to hit the theaters. Now played by actor Joaquin Phoenix, the Joker’s first appearance was on April 25, 1940 in one of the original comic books titled Batman #1. The characters Sophie Dumond and Murray Franklin are being introduced as central supporting characters in the standalone Joker film. The first movie to be created involving the Joker was Tim Burton’s Batman, from 1989. This film will be a brand origin story that will provide insight and understanding of the character Joker.
Besides his first appearances, the Joker was one of the main characters in the July 2008 film titled The Dark Knight. The film was based in Gotham City, and revolved around the DC Comic character Batman who was played by Christian Bale. This was one of the Joker’s most popular appearances. Joker was played by actor Heath Ledger and he won many awards for his role in the movie. Ledger won an Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, British Academy Film Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for best supporting actor. Ledger passed away in 2009.
Eight months after the release of The Joker, a new DC film will be released to anticipating fans. Following the first movie titled Wonder Woman which was released in 2017, directors are planning and creating a second movie to the film series titled Wonder Woman 1984. “The first Wonder Woman broke a number of box office glass ceilings for a female superhero property and female-directed one, making it the highest-grossing film of summer 2017 with $412.5 million at the domestic box office, and $821.8M worldwide,” according to Deadline Hollywood. Directed by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman 1984 is still in the early stages of production and it will be released on June 5, 2020.
The female superhero character appeared on TV on November 7, 1975 in the original television series titled Wonder Woman. The show ran for three seasons and original characters from the comics were portrayed. Wonder Woman was played by Lynda Carter and the U.S. Navy soldier Steve Trevor was played by Lyle Waggoner.
The female superhero first appeared in the All Star Comics #8 in October 1941. As the year 2020 is approaching, some characters and actors have been confirmed for the 2020 film. Among them are Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), Cheetah (Kristen Wiig), Antiope (Robin Wright), and Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen). Cheetah is a female character who is commonly known as the archenemy of Wonder Woman. First introduced in the comic book Wonder Woman #6 in 1943, Cheetah will become one of the central characters in this new film.
