Business teacher John Alvarez says he believes that many students in Nutley High School are only taking Financial Literacy to fulfill the requirement to graduate. “[Students] don’t really have a choice, but I know some take it to learn. Some even take it for the requirement and come back to ask for relearning,” Alvarez said.
As the curtain rises this weekend on Nutley High School's highly anticipated spring musical “Mean Girls: High School Version”, the excitement from director Alexandra Vecchio and students in the cast continues to grow.

Every teenager can share their lives in many ways, including social media. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat have become a part of teenagers' daily lives. Social media has become more than a source of entertainment; it has become a place where teens can express themselves.
From January 21st to 22nd, Nutley High School held testing for the Seal of Biliteracy, which is awarded to students who are proficient in two or more languages. Its purpose is to highlight the value of being bilingual, to encourage students to become bilingual, and to celebrate those who are. To earn the seal, students must do well in English class and pass a test to prove their fluency in a second language.
Throughout the high school, students spend a lot of time talking about major local sports teams, especially the New York Jets, the New York Giants, and the New York Rangers. One team in particular that is located in New Jersey itself seems to make the biggest impact: the National Hockey League’s own New Jersey Devils.
Several seniors earned certificates in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) last week, having successfully completed both the written and physical tests at the end of the second marking period.

At Nutley High School, there’s a program called RULER that’s helping students create a better understanding of their emotions. The goal of RULER is to teach emotional intelligence and the monthly lessons are designed to encourage students to think about their emotions as they go about their day.
Treble choir students performed at the Yuletide concert on December 12, 2024 in the high school auditorium. Members of the treble choir sang “Infant Holy Infant Lowly” arranged by Elizabeth Alexander, “Elijah Rock” arranged by Victor Johnson, and "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing" arranged by Tami Creamer.
Every year, students are caught vaping and face disciplinary action. Vice Principal Rovetto has seen a decrease this year, however: “Last year we had 24 students caught vaping; these numbers were the lowest I have seen in years,” he said.
Band Director Vincent Vicchiariello is certain the next band concert in the spring for Nutley High School will “push and challenge” the performers. Vicchiariello, supervisor of Fine & Performing Arts/Career & Technical Education, will be the conductor of the band for the spring concert.

Students feel that managing their time efficiently in high school is harder than it seems, and is leading to greater amounts of anxiety and stress.
As the school year progresses, the overwhelming amount of homework a student receives has only seemed to worsen. Doing assignments all day in school, followed by doing an endless amount of homework after school results in barely any free time or socializing.
The rooms throughout the house are emptied of what used to be, while the boxes are stacked in the corner, filled to the brim. Footsteps descend out of each room, leaving behind the memories that were made there. The hands that packed these boxes and made those memories belong to Emma Valdez, a sophomore who has left what had become her home to pursue a new start that awaits her in Bluffton, South Carolina.

The cheerleaders of Nutley High School and The Nutley Department Parks and Recreation flock out on the field and chant their iconic cheers as the sweaty football players pant to score. Some may say cheerleading is not considered a sport, but one woman begs to differ.
Senior Prom. The night of nights. It’s an event some people spend years dreaming of, building up what the night will look like when it eventually arrives for them. They dream about the perfect dress, the perfect shoes, the perfect date, even—but when the time comes to turn those dreams into a reality, they cringe as they realize:
Gertrude Hawk chocolates are a staple delicacy within the walls of the high school. From crispy to caramel, virtually every NHS student has bought a bar of chocolate at least once in school. More specifically, everyone has bought a bar of chocolate from one specific person, dubbed as the school’s “chocolate guy” for the last three years.
The last bell of the school day rings. As most students begin to make their way out of the building, a small corner of the high school remains active. A group of around 15 students congregate in the school’s greenhouse. These students will leave with their terrariums, which they will care for themselves.
The Spring concert took place on Wednesday, May 17 and involved the band, choir, and orchestra.
As summer quickly approaches, many students are planning what to do with friends, family, or even on their own. Planning things to do can be tough for high school students, especially when they don’t have a driver's license. This resorts to students doing things around town. Although hanging outside is fun, what's better than air conditioning? In regards to keeping cool, the Nutley Public Library has many fun events for all ages such as volunteering, events, clubs, and many more interesting things.
