Students Opinions on Hailey Bieber and Selena Gomez Drama

Growing up in the 2000’s, many fans caught the infamous “Bieber fever” from pop star Justin Bieber. Being a part of the Justin Bieber fandom came the support of his relationship known as “Jelena” between him and actor/singer Selena Gomez. In recent months, many teens in NHS and across the world have been consumed in all the new drama between Bieber’s ex, Selena Gomez, and current wife, Hailey Bieber. Information regarding this drama between Hailey and Selena has spread like wildfire through platforms like TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram. Students seem to be taking sides and have very strong opinions.

The drama between Hailey and Selena has been going on for years, due to Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber's past relationship. Soon after Justin and Selena broke up, Justin was engaged to Hailey within a matter of months. This enraged many “Jelena” fans because Selena and Justin are all fans knew, so his moving on to Hailey shook fans. This “love triangle” of theirs has always caught eyes from the public, but recently it has completely blown up across many social media platforms. 

It all started when Selena posted a TikTok video explaining how, when she did her eyebrows, she accidentally laminated them too much. Attention from fans and followers grew quickly when Hailey and Kylie Jenner posted an Instagram story of them on FaceTime showing their eyebrows in the camera with the caption, “This was an accident???” shortly after Selena posted the TikTok. Fans say that the photo was uncalled for and that they were intimidating Selena. NHS sophomore Vincenza Intili said, “I think Hailey is in the wrong because there is video evidence of her saying negative things towards Selena for no probable cause. I think Hailey pretends to be all nice and sweet but knows Justin is still in love with Selena.”

Students have various opinions about the celebrity drama. Some believe there are different motives causing it, blaming Justin Bieber and saying he is still in love with Selena. Others blame the toxicity of social media, while others think it is jealousy. “I feel Hailey has unresolved feelings over Selena [previously] dating her husband Justin. Also, Hailey has a lot of jealousy over Selena and she thinks Justin is still in love with Selena.” said sophomore, Sarea DeMatteo.

Justin, Hailey, and Selena not addressing the drama online and staying very quiet has led to maybe false rumors which did not help the situation. It's clear that fans and followers will never let drama that has been occurring for years go. Intili said, “Hailey's motive is being jealous. The society's motives are to just get another story to talk about since they are just bored with their own life and want to see the reactions of people.”

Although Selena and Hailey have been quiet about the drama, Selena recently posted on her Instagram story addressing recent threats towards Hailey. In the story, Selena expressed that Hailey reached out to her explaining she has been receiving dangerous messages from fans: “Hailey Bieber reached out to me and let me know that she has been receiving death threats and such hateful negativity.” Selena sad that she always advocates for kindness and she wants it all to stop. 

Many fans disagree with how Selena has made peace with Hailey Bieber. Although both Hailey and Selena have huge platforms -- Selena is the most followed woman on Instagram -- neither woman wants any negativity spreading through their platforms. It is clear that Selena and Hailey both want the same thing at the end of the day, which is peace and positivity for themselves and their loved ones.
