As summer quickly approaches, many students are planning what to do with friends, family, or even on their own. Planning things to do can be tough for high school students, especially when they don’t have a driver's license. This resorts to students doing things around town. Although hanging outside is fun, what's better than air conditioning? In regards to keeping cool, the Nutley Public Library has many fun events for all ages such as volunteering, events, clubs, and many more interesting things.
As the school year comes to a close, it seems as if tryouts and new sports seasons are just around the corner for student athletes. Even athletes who have secured varsity, club, or all star positions on a team in past years still find themselves succumbing to the stress of new beginnings. During the off season that many athletes have had in recent weeks, student athletes are taking on the responsibility of working hard to retain and gain skills on their own.
On Monday, May 15th, 2023, NHS hosted Wellness Day to support Mental Health Awareness Month. The event was organized by NHS CORE Ambassadors, guidance counselor Victoria Lewis, and SAC Averi Zarbetski, along with the NHS school counseling department, and sponsored by Nutley Municipal Alliance.
On April 26, the RIISE program headed to Brookdale Park where they competed in the 2023 Essex County Special Olympics event. Students with intellectual disabilities can compete in several Olympic-style events through the Special Olympics, a nationwide organization that divides the country into states and districts based on location.

The game of baseball has been America’s pastime for more than a century. For years, people have been going all over the country -- or have remain glued to their TV -- to watch their favorite MLB baseball team play nine-innings of pure, untimed baseball. However, installed for the 2023 season and seasons beyond, there are new rules which include different timers and time limits. The new rules have largely been the recipient of dismay and annoyance from fans, yet there is a portion that is in support of the time regulations.
Students interested in a career in the healthcare industry have a chance to begin studying for their future today through the Rutgers Allied Health Program. The idea for this program “allows students an opportunity to take college level classes related to health-sciences in high school,” said Jenna Rubino, the current K-12 science coordinator, and coordinator of the program which is available to sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
Close your eyes and picture a candle. It has a beautiful bright flame that seems like it could burn forever, so it just keeps on burning. Over time, the candle runs out of wax, the wick burns away, and the flame begins to dwindle, eventually dying out. The candle has used up all of the resources it needs to burn. Now, no matter how many times you try to light it, the flame will not come back.
Like other sports at NHS, participating in track can be demanding, especially for a student first entering high school. Team members are expected to stay in shape and train even on days when they don't have practice.
When then-freshman Roman Wingenfeld was searching for a club to join, it was during the year schools switched over to virtual learning as a result of COVID-19. Rather than attending the annual NHS Club Fair and getting to meet the co-presidents face-to-face, Roman found himself reading club names off an online sheet list.
As graduation is right around the corner, many seniors are looking into continuing their education this fall. In 2021, 61.8% of American high school graduates enrolled into a college or university. However, the tuition for post-high school education can be fairly expensive.
The high school held their annual College Fair in the gymnasium on Thursday, March 9, 2023. The event took place from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m., with over 75 colleges in attendance, as well as the military, trade schools, and vo-tech schools present.

Scholarships are an essential source of funding for many students, especially those who cannot afford to pay for their education out of pocket. At NHS, students can apply for multiple scholarships, according to the Testing Coordinator Persis Aviles. “There are About 80 scholarships this year, which varies from year to year,” Aviles said.
Whether from a friend or a teacher, we've all heard the term senioritis, which is usually mentioned as a joke. In reality, a study by Omniscient showed that 78 percent of students experienced senioritis. So, what is it? More importantly, how does a student combat it?

It provides an incredible mix of scandal, jazz, fame, and humor with a hint of love.
Freshman Catalina Narvaez recalls the time when she first discovered the violin at the age of four. She was attending a concert with her mother, and she instantly saw herself as a musician. "I begged my mom to buy me one. From then on I officially started playing and practicing at the age of 5.” Since then, her goal has been to become a professional violinist.
