Nutley’s Annual Tree & Menorah Lighting Brightens Up the Town Once Again!

One of Nutley Township’s oldest traditions lights up the town of Nutley with the holiday spirit. The annual celebration of the lighting of the tree and menorah took place on Sunday, December 4, 2022. Franklin Avenue was closed between Chestnut Street and New Street from 4:30-6:30pm. The event organized activities in the John H. Walker Middle School and along the Nutley Park Oval throughout Franklin Avenue.

Live entertainment entertained those in attendance with holiday music from local music groups. Nutley’s Coordinator of Fine, Practical & Performing Arts/Career & Technical Education, Vincent Vicchiariello, directed groups including the NHS Brass Ensemble, NHS Strings, NHS Chamber Singers, JHWMS Jazz, JHWMS Debonairs, and the Elementary Choir who performed for guests throughout the night. DJ Rob Frannicola kept guests engaged with a mixture of holiday standards and contemporary hits.

One of many activities was Santa making his return to Nutley after visiting the Nutley Park Oval for “Santa’s Arrival” on November 25, 2022. Santa and his reindeer waited for pictures with children throughout the night. One of Santa's elves, on stilts, engaged with those dancing in the live entertainment area with dance moves and pictures. Mini train rides and horse and buggy rides were also offered.

Food, treats, and drinks were available under multiple different tents served by family and friends along with Nutley schools' fundraising tables. There were treats like hot chocolate, cider, pretzels, hotdogs, roasted chestnuts, doughnuts, and more.

The minutes leading up to the countdown there was a speech that reminded all about the importance of spreading holiday cheer to all, especially ones that aren't always celebrated as much as others like the celebration of Hanukkah. It was reminded that Nutley has always been a town to support neighbors of all faiths and religious beliefs.

Soon enough, the countdown began as the town shouted “Three, two, one…,” and the 60+ foot Christmas tree filled with colorful light along with smaller Christmas trees beside it. A large sign that displayed the phrase, “Peace On Earth,” lit up along the football field of the Nutley Park Oval.
