Girls' tennis team raises $1,000 for research
The girls' tennis team took to the Demuro Park courts on October 21 for their annual breast cancer fundraiser. The Servathon consists of members serving 25 balls on the court; each ball made into the box is a $1 donation from their preferred donor.
The event is led by Head Coach Julian Gruttadauria and features students from grades 9-12. Gruttaduria said, “We’ve done this event for at least three years now, and it hasn't once been unsuccessful”.
Gruttaduria had Junior Varsity player Alexis Rodriguez design pink shirts for the girls to wear during the event. Rodriguez says, “I'm glad I have the opportunity to design shirts for such an impactful event in the tennis community”. This year, the team raised more than $1,000 in support of the American Cancer Society.
Doubles partners, freshman Ever Mayes and sophomore Sofia Frangoulis, are among the many girls helping to decorate the courts for their Servathon. Sofia Frangoulis said, "Decorating the courts is always fun for the team. I've done this for two years now, and it's always something I look forward to doing”.
The girls' designs provide spectators with colorful visuals and bring attention to an important cause. Mayes said, “Not only do we have the fall team, but the boys' spring team also comes and helps with the event”.
With the support of the tennis community, this 2 ½ hour long event showcases their wish to make a powerful impact in raising awareness for breast cancer survivors. “My team always illuminates a positive attitude toward the community, and we will continue to do so,” Frangoulis said.
