NHS School Stores Opens Coffee Delivery Service for Staff

On Monday, February 10, Nutley High School opened a largely student-run Coffee Shop, available for the NHS staff. This shop is run by Mrs. Megan Della Fave and provides students in the Structured Learning Experience and Career Awareness Program, an opportunity to work and give back to the NHS community. “The store was the idea of Director of Special Services, Mrs. Helen Doyle-Marino, even before she became the Director,” says Mrs. Megan Della Fave. The School Store is located in the main hallways of Nutley High School and its new coffee delivery service is open on Mondays and Thursdays, during class periods and after lunch, to staff.

The School Store opened in the fall of 2018. With the launching of the NHS Coffee Shop, came redecorating as well. An awning was built, curtains were made, and window art was created with the help of Mr. Tirrito, paraprofessionals Mrs. Gianfranceso and Mrs. Minichini, and Mrs. Nicole Boyce, from Washington School. “Our students are providing NHS with a warm and cozy coffee shop feel,” says Mr. Materia, NHS Vice Principal. This rebranding creates a new type of feel to the high school, while also giving students experience and the chance to provide a service for teachers and other staff in the building. 

The official NHS Coffee Shop menu offers multiple coffees, teas, and other beverages ranging from $2 to $3 per drink. From cappuccinos to monthly specials, this shop truly has it all. “Orders must be placed using the order form under the staff menu on the Nutley Schools' website by noon on the day of desired delivery,” says Mrs. Megan Della Fave. Teachers may order via the internet to get the drink they desire. If they’re having a bad morning, they may visit the store to get their coffee and have a chat with the friendly student workers. 

This new addition to the Nutley High School Store allows students the chance to gain working experience while also giving the staff delicious drinks. However, this would not have been possible without the help of Mrs. Doyle- Marino, Director of Special Services, and Mrs. Yasso, the Transition Coordinator. “Mrs. Doyle- Marino and Mrs. Yasso developed the school store. Mrs. Yasso and I worked together to write the grant that was awarded to us by the Nutley Educational Foundation to create the coffee service,” explains Mrs. Megan Della Fave. 

The drinks are made in room 313 in NHS, but delivered fresh. With the new coffee service in the school, this store will benefit both students and staff. Students will gain valuable work experience and staff can get an afternoon caffeine fix delivered.
