Flag Football to be recognized next year

Youth sports have always been important in Nutley. One program that has grown a lot in recent years is Nutley Flag Football, and in the spring of 2027 it is becoming a fully recognized sport. What started as a small unknown local league has turned into a very popular program that brings families, kids, and countless community members together.

Over the past couple of years many students have signed up for the program and all their camps that Nutley provides. One of the players, sophomore Maddy Mitchow, enjoys being a part of the team. She said, “Flag football is really fun because it's competitive but it also feels safe. You still get to score touchdowns and run plays but you don't have to worry about tackling and full contact.” Her experience shows why more kids are signing up for the program. This soon to be sport gives players a chance to stay active, learn football skills, and be apart of a team in a positive environment.

Coach Christian Helm, who is one of the head coaches of the Flag Football team, has seen the program grow over time. He said, “When we first started, we didn't have many teams; but, now we have multiple age groups and more community and town support than ever.” He said the focus isn't just about winning every game, but also teaching responsibility, leadership, and teamwork. Helm thinks that this will become an extremely popular sport and that the growth of the program shows how much interest there is about Flag Football in Nutley.

Senior Sydney Tramontana feels her time on the team has impacted her personally. She said, "I've been playing for years and it has helped me grow as both a player and a person. Now that I'm a senior, I'm trying to set good examples for the new and younger players.” Tramontana believes the program helps athletes build confidence and develop important life skills.

Overall, Nutley Youth Flag Football has become more than just a “sport” in Nutley. It brings everyone together and builds community pride. As the league continues to grow it will become one of the most popular sports in Nutley.
