On September 7, Nutley High School opened for full, in-person instruction after being virtual or hybrid since March of 2020. This opening made students more excited than ever to return to school and learn normally again.
In Nutley, high school seniors have an opportunity to earn scholarships from local donors for their hard work and dedication to their education. The scholarships given are to help seniors “with the cost of tuition and fees for college or post-secondary plans,” says Mrs. Gerckens, the Coordinator of School Counseling here in Nutley. NHS has so much respect for our donors, especially during times like these. Their generosity does not go unnoticed.
Recently in South Carolina, a new law has been put in place regarding executions for death row inmates. South Carolina’s Governor, Henry McMaster, has signed to approve the electric chair and firing squad option if lethal injection is not available for executions.
The Covid-19 pandemic has left the world in a state of chaos for more than a year. For Americans, the pandemic experiences have been a whirlwind of damage to families, friends, and personally as well. The public has been on edge, waiting for something to be done to stop the spread of COVID. Scientists have been working endlessly on developing an effective and safe vaccine since January of 2020.
On March 11, 17-year-old senior, Taylor Carnell was interviewed by the journalism class at NHS. Carnell is the face of Nutley High School’s Student Council and has been committed to student government since his high school years in a small charter school in Idaho where he grew up. Although Carnell was not formally a member of the Student Council, he was an active member of his school’s community. Leadership motivates him and that's why he enjoys being president as much as he does. He moved to Nutley NJ and started his junior year at Nutley High School.
Going back to school during COVID-19 has been a topic of discussion for many months now. Debates on whether it is safe to go back to school and how was a challenge that sparked many disagreements amongst the NHS community. After going back and forth, the NHS has decided to finally send students and staff back to school in a hybrid manner. NHS students will return in person for one or two days out of the five-day week.
President Joe Biden and Madam Vice President Kamala Harris took charge and immediate action during one of the most challenging times in history. They are coming into the White House very prepared with specific plans, timelines, and changes that are needed to get America back on track. President Joe Biden shocked America when he publicly signed 17 executive orders on his first night of being President.
For the past 114 years, New York City has made it their priority to ring in the New Year in a fun and exciting way. Each year there is live entertainment in Times Square by the biggest musical artists of that year. People from all over the world have come to celebrate New Year’s Eve in New York. For some people, it is on their bucket list to visit and be part of the annual celebration.
The Coronavirus has caused life to be put on hold and with that comes isolation. School and work meetings have had to operate via Zoom. All restaurants and stores, throughout the United States, were closed down for months. The world going through a nationwide lockdown has made everyone feel hopeless. Nothing could ever prepare someone for this type of tragedy. Almost all of the American people have had to put their lives on hold for nine months.
Natalie Spina is a 17-year-old senior at Nutley High School and is a current editor for the Maroon & Gray. She is a part of the NHS varsity rowing team and is involved in Key Club, Women’s Activism Club, and Latin Honor Society. She hopes to pursue journalistic writing in the future.
