The Start of NHS Spring Sports

Spring sports started in the first week of April, however, due to COVID-19, the spring season got pushed back because winter sports started in January. It is now April and baseball, softball, spring track, tennis, crew, golf, and lacrosse are all starting up. COVID-19 is still a problem all coaches are thinking about so there are still precautions being taken.

Ms. McNish, a spring track coach, says she has high hopes for this season to go smoothly. Track is not a contact sport like basketball or football so that helps for less COVID-19 spreading. Just like fall and winter, spring sports will have the same precautions. All athletes are getting tested before the season starts, temperatures will be taken every practice or meet, and masks will be worn coming into practice, after practice, on the bus, and waiting to do your events. The winter seasons were shorter than usual but Mcnish says, “It is going to be a full season for spring, we just have less time to train and practice before our first meet!” That is a huge positive since it was so unfortunate the winter seasons were shortened.

Spring Freshman athlete Jonathan Breihof says, “Covid spreads a lot less outside than inside because of the airflow and weather so, hopefully the season stays on and we are able to play baseball without spreading COVID-19.” Jonathan will be playing baseball this upcoming season. He is very excited to play because he has not played in two years and he now gets to play with all his old teammates. He has high hopes everything will go smoothly regarding COVID-19. He expects the season to be a little different because there will be precautions taken; such as social distancing in the dugout, spaced-out bus rides, and daily temperature checks.

The other spring sports, softball, tennis, crew, lacrosse, and golf, all will be taking precautions as well. All sports will be wearing masks and getting daily temperature checks before all practices and games. All athletes will be expected to follow these precautions, if they do not listen they must leave the event.

Everyone is so excited for all these sports seasons to start. Hopefully everything goes smoothly and there are no COVID-19 outbreaks.
