NHS Clubs: An Overview on Virtual Opportunities

At Nutley High School, it is a key focus to maintain inclusive activities and clubs for students in all grades. With COVID-19 restrictions and virtual learning taking place, it is important to have certain guidelines implemented. Specific coordinators and administrators at NHS have been selected to run, organize, and manage the different activities for each club.  

Mr. Denis Williams, NHS Principal, and Mr. Joseph Materia, NHS Vice Principal, work with the clubs, along with department coordinators. These coordinators accommodate clubs that are directly involved with certain subjects/fields. Along with clubs being run, come the annual food and clothing drive. In the past, all clubs have helped with gathering money, food, and clothes. Due to new restrictions, Key Club and Student Council are in charge of gathering food that can be dropped off at the NHS greeter station.

“I help with organizing the club fair and manage the clerical responsibilities of clubs,” says Mr. Joseph Materia, NHS Vice Principal. Mr. Materia is in charge of managing Nutley High School’s clubs through the school’s website. He also ensures that club advisors are BOE (Board of Education) approved for each school year. Mr. Materia plays a crucial role in keeping clubs running smoothly and in line.

There are approximately 40 various clubs currently being run at NHS. "For student safety, gatherings have been virtual,” says Mr. Materia when asked about how these meetings have been occurring. These club meets are held after school during office hours, where students may participate and share ideas. Through Schoology, club advisors and coordinators may give a weekly discussion post as well, to further discuss different viewpoints for the next meeting.

NHS will continue to ensure that students have a chance to truly make a difference for their school and community through these clubs. Students and administrators have done an excellent job on doing just so.
