Choir and Band Perform Annual Holiday Concert

The Nutley choir and band held their annual holiday concert at Saint Mary's Church on Friday, December 12th. It’s a tradition to go to St. Mary’s every year, and many students enjoyed the chance to perform in front of hundreds of audience members.

Choir student Sophomore Mia Ortiz was happy to have this performance experience for the first time. “One of my favorite pieces was the piece called “My Soul is a River”. I think we all connected with it really well, and I loved how the song was slightly longer than the others,” she  said. “Since it was my first ever concert at Saint Mary’s there were some nerves at first, but once we started singing, it all came together. I felt like we sounded pretty solid.” Ortiz was pleased that so many were there who appreciated their hard work. “Overall, though, I’m proud of how far we’ve come as a group. I felt like we have worked very well together, and now our accomplishments are showing to lots of people, definitely because of the amount of effort we put into the songs during class.”

According to parent Jaime Grant, “Everyone sounded beautiful. I loved how everyone's voice echoed after every song. I really enjoyed  how every group got a chance to perform. It wasn’t only like one group was standing out, and got more of an opportunity to sing. Every group had just as much advantage as the other.” Grant thought that the pace of the show was perfect. “Just to put it all together, it was the perfect amount of time for performances. The whole audience was engaged the entire time, and no one was looking to leave early. The way they had everything set up made everyone more excited for the next performance to arrive.”

Sophomore Isa Harrington is a former band member who felt nostalgic after seeing the concert. “Just seeing that performance made me want to rejoin the band. Everyone was amazing, and genuinely there weren’t any flaws.”  She said, “This is the first time I saw everyone from a distance. All I have to say was I’m glad I decided to go.”
