Being a student in Nutley for 13 years has impacted me in many ways. Throughout each year of schooling, I’ve not only grown as a person, but also all of my teachers have taught me things that will stick with me even outside of the classroom. In my last year of middle school, before we had to venture off into the high school, I had a teacher that challenged and pushed me like never before. Mrs. Nancy Thunell, an anti-bullying specialist at Lincoln School and Spring Garden, is the face behind many successful and helpful activities that occur within the community. Not only does she devote her time and energy into counseling the students at the elementary level, but she is also the club advisor for the St. John’s Club which collects food donations monthly to bring to St. John’s Church in Newark.
On January 18, 2020, Nutley faced a tragedy like no other. Amanda Russo, 29, and her 7 year-old son, Danny, were victims of a deadly house fire on Park St. in Nutley, NJ. The house set on fire on a Saturday afternoon leaving the 74-year old grandfather injured and grieving.
Hosted annually at the Nutley Park Oval, the holiday season kicked off with the lighting of the tree on Sunday, December 8. At approximately 5:30 p.m, the festivities and holiday music began. With a section of Franklin Avenue closed from Chestnut Street to New Street, adults and kids were allowed to roam around and have fun. Nutley Mayor Joseph Scarpelli, in charge of the event, brought in horse and buggy rides for the kids, popcorn, roasted chestnuts, a live nativity, and song performances from the Middle School and High School choirs.
