The Things That You Should Know about President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is currently the Ukrainian President. He was born on January 25, 1978, and grew up in a city in Ukraine called Kryvyi Rih. He became the President of Ukraine in 2019, and is the 6th ever President in their history.

Mr. Zelenskyy’s life before presidency was very unique compared to other politicians. After getting a law degree from Kyiv National Economic University, he pursued not something in politics, but comedy. His big debut was in a TV show called Servant of the People, where he played a satirical version of the actual president of Ukraine. This show was wildly popular, and it was most likely too tempting to resist. 

On December 31, 2018, Zelenskyy announced he was running for president, and with a 73.2% popularity vote, he won the job in a landslide. 

The spotlight is on him now, but not for a TV show or a movie. The light is hot and glaring, all because of the intense conflict between Ukraine and Russia. 

With his most recent appearance—at the time of his article—before the United Nations Security Council on April 5, 2022, President Zelenskyy is trying to push for more resources from other countries. “Where is the security that the Security Council needs to guarantee?” Zelenskyy said during the meeting, proceeding to show gruesome images from Bucha. Pictures of the bodies from Russia’s invasion have been circling around the media, being declared war crimes by the United States.  “We know how to fight. We know how to win. But without sustainable and sufficient supplies requested by Ukraine, these wins will be accompanied by enormous sacrifices,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said during a meeting with the United Nations. 

The war has not only changed the way of life for Ukrainians but all over the world. With large companies like Apple, Visa, McDonald’s, and Nike pulling out of Russia, ripples of change have spread. 

Specifically, Russia is a large exporter of oil, and this cut-off will make gas even more expensive than it already is.

As of April 8, 2022, the United States has given Ukraine $13.6 billion in aid for the war, and Ukraine and Russia are at a standstill. All eyes are on the war and President Zelenskyy, and all that can be done is to wait with bated breath for the next major event.
