Students' and Tech’s Thoughts on All Things Nails

Nail care has become increasingly popular among high school students as a form of self-expression and a way to make a statement. From simple manicures to intricate nail art, adults and teens alike are exploring a wide range of nail trends.

Scarlett Velez, a nail tech based in Newark, NJ, is often asked by her clients for one of the most popular trends in the nail industry: acrylic nails. Velez said, “Acrylics are artificial nails that are made by mixing a liquid monomer with a powder polymer to form a paste-like substance that can be sculpted over the natural nail or nail tips. The paste hardens and dries when exposed to air, forming a strong and durable artificial nail. The nails are then filled, drilled down, shaped, and nail polish is applied.”

“I love getting my nails done because it adds a pop of color to my outfits and makes me feel put together,” said sophomore Jocelyn Soto. “I usually get acrylic nails because it lasts longer, I don't have to worry about chipping, and I can make my natural nails look longer.”

When it comes to time, most students agree that getting their nails done is a relaxing experience. “It usually takes me around an hour or two to get my nails done,” said junior Ajla Dudushi. “It's a nice way to unwind and take a break from schoolwork.”

Some of the most popular nail salons among local students are Fine Touch Nail Salon, Viva La Beauty, and Green TeaNails. “I usually go to Fine Touch because they have a wide range of colors and designs to choose from,” said sophomore Zariah Roman. “Their staff is also really friendly and welcoming.”

As for pricing, it can vary depending on the technique and salon. A basic manicure can cost around $30, while a gel manicure can cost upwards of $40, acrylic nails would start around $60 and can get to over $100. “I usually get a basic manicure because it's more affordable and I can change the color more often,” said sophomore Sara Sonnylal.

When it comes to longevity, it depends on the technique and how well you take care of your nails. A basic manicure can last up to a week, while a gel manicure can last up to two weeks, and acrylic nails last around a month. “I usually get my nails done every two weeks because that's when my gel manicure starts to chip,” said sophomore Brooke Yero.

For those who are new to the world of nails, it's important to keep in mind that nail care goes beyond just getting them done at a salon. “It's important to take care of your nails at home by keeping them clean and moisturized,” said Luciana Crocco. “Also, if you're getting a gel manicure, make sure to use sunscreen on your hands because the UV light can damage your skin.”

Overall, getting your nails done can be a fun way to express yourself and take a break from schoolwork. Whether you're into simple manicures or intricate nail art, there's a technique and salon out there for everyone.
