Biden plans to remove troops from Afghanistan

On April 13, 2021 President Joseph Biden announced that he was planning to remove troops from Afghanistan by September 11, 2021. The move has had mixed reactions from politicians and citizens alike. Many Republicans want to keep soldiers in Afghanistan and their reason as to why is because they say the goals of the war have not been completely fulfilled. But on the contrary many Democrats stated that keeping troops in Afghanistan is a further drain on the economy and a further loss of life which many politicians and civilians deem unnecessary.

Among those who believe that Biden pulling troops out of Afghanistan is a mistake, many believe that doing so is admitting to American military ineptitude. Many Republicans stand beside these sentiments, while very few Democrats view the removal of troops as a mistake. Many Republicans also believe that leaving Afghanistan means leaving without fulfilling the goals of the war, which in their eyes are to deny Al Qaeda a base of operations. They believe this because they think that once the U.S withdraws troops, the Taliban will quickly take over the government and once more give Al Qaeda a base of operations.

Those who are in support of Biden withdrawing from Afghanistan believe that the goals of the war have already been achieved. According to the Washington Post, “We went to Afghanistan to deliver justice to those who attacked us on September 11th. We believe we achieved that objective some years ago.” This is referring to the death of Osama Bin Laden, the man behind the 9/11 terrorist attacks and to the extermination of Al Qaeda and the removal of the Taliban government. All of those goals except the extermination of Al Qaeda have been achieved.

The move was a big shock to many in the nation. However, for most of the people it is a positive move to end America's longest war, most people believe this because they want to bring their soldiers home and their loved ones, and end the loss of American life in this war.
