Nutley Participates In 5k Walk/Run For Former Raider Gianna Signorile

A 5k run/walk (three mile walk/run and a one mile fun run for children) was held on November 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at De Muro Park, in honor of the former Nutley cheerleader, Gianna Signorile. The event raised $10,000 for medical research.

Signorile was diagnosed with a rare type of pediatric cancer, Fibrolamellar Carcinoma (FLC), on May 26, 2020 . She fought for 18 months until her passing on December 20, 2021 at the age of 21. Her family and many friends continue to hold events to honor her life.

The money raised will benefit research of pediatric cancer, specifically FLC, which is an uncommon type of liver cancer that usually grows in teenagers and adults under the age of 40 who have healthy livers. Her mother, Dawn Signorile, wanted to bring awareness to this disease and the effects it has on families.

Registration was encouraged prior to the event; however, there was a table set up at the park for anyone that showed up last minute and wanted to participate. There was a $30 admission fee for adults and children above the age of 14, while children  13 and under got in for free. A water bottle and t-shirt were handed out upon registration.

Over 200 people attended, including friends, family, teachers, random people who were aware of the event, and the high school cheer squad. Skyler Yero said, “The cheerleaders were there to cheer on participants and support their efforts because Gianna was a cheerleader.”

Entertainment by musician Chris Barry was included for the participants to enjoy during the 5k. Refreshments like hot chocolate and apple cider were also provided, along with some snacks.  Yero said, “The event was emotional but beautiful. It brought insight on the legacy Gianna left and the impact she had through the kind of person she was.”
