2022 Oscars: The 94th Annual Academy Awards
The 94th Annual Academy Awards was on March 27th, returning back to the Dolby Theater in Hollywood. This year the show was hosted by three people, including Amy Schumer, Regina Hall, and Wanda Sykes. This is the first time the Oscars have had multiple hosts since 2011. Before the Oscars, Hall said to ABC, "I think it's exciting, like, it's Women's History Month, it's quite historic, all of us together," This year's show featured several great moments that you will never forget, as well as a shocking moment from Will Smith.
Will Smith won best actor in King Richard, his first-ever Oscar award. He gave an emotional speech pulling at everyone’s hearts. During his speech, he says, “This is a beautiful moment, I’m not crying about winning an award, it’s not about winning an award for me. It’s about being able to shine a light on all of the people.” Smith went on to list off all the members of his King Richard cast.
Twenty minutes before receiving this award, as seen all over social media, Smith slapped actor and comedian, Chris Rock across the face. While Rock was giving his speech, he made a joke about Smith’s wife’s Alopecia. Smith reacted angrily by walking onto the stage and slapping Rock, then cursing him out from his seat. Later, he apologized via video on his social media pages.
Aside from the slap being heard around the world; the popular movie, Dune, came out in 2021 and was a huge hit. The movie won six Oscar awards. Including Production Design, Cinematography, Achievement in Sound, Original Score, Visual Effects, and Film Editing.
The cast of Encanto performs “We Don’t Talk about Bruno, '' which was a big part of the show since the movie blasted off to the top of streaming charts since it came out. Disney announced Encanto has actually been rewatched more than 180 million times around the globe. Disney+ subscribers have shared that they have watched it more than five times. The movie won an award for Best Animated Feature Film.
Some big winners were Jane Campion for best director. Now being the third woman ever to win that award. “CODA” won best picture, the first streaming movie to win the best picture award. Jessica Chastain won the best actress award, her first time receiving an Oscar; she had been nominated three other times.
The cast of White Men Can't Jump reunited 30 years after the film's debut. The Cinematography award was presented by the three stars, again being received by the movie “Dune”.
The Oscars also celebrated the 60th anniversary of James Bond. Kelly Slater says as he is introducing the celebration, “James Bond is the most iconic and legendary secret agent in cinema history.” Along with Kelly Slater, Tony Hawk and Shaun White go through many of the characters James Bond has played over the past 60 years of acting. They play a video montage containing various footage from his films.
This year there were numerous outstanding performances. Billie Elish and FINNEAS performed, “No Time to Die,” which went on to win the Oscar for Best Song. Reba McEntire performed: “Somehow You Do” and Sebastian Yatra performed: “Dos Orgutias.” Beyonce had an amazing performance of “Be Alive” from the film, King Richard.
