A House Divided Cannot Stand

On Wednesday January 6, 2021, a group of domestic terrorists invaded the U.S. Capitol building as lawmakers met to certify the electoral college votes for President Elect Biden. Earlier in the day, President Trump had directed his supporters to “fight like hell,” “stop the steal” of the election, and go to the capitol building during his “Save America” rally. As a result of Wednesday’s events, five individuals died and House Democrats drafted articles of impeachment against the president for “high crimes and misdemeanors.”

I believe the attack that took place on Wednesday showed us how divided Americans truly are. Many Americans, including myself, were deeply saddened, angered and frustrated to watch the attack on our democracy take place. After 2020 had come to an end, I was looking forward to better times for our nation. I hoped that we would achieve peace, prosperity and unity after the difficult year we had had. In light of recent events, I think we, as a nation, need to work together to become united, forget about our political biases for a moment, and work toward better times.

As I’ve seen how politics can divide neighbors, friends, and family members, I’ve come to realize that we need to be accepting and understanding of our differences. In order to maintain our relationships and work toward unity, we need to treat others with dignity and respect. Watching the mob that invaded the capitol building showed me that many Americans do not know how to be respectful, understanding, and accepting of opposing views. Hence, this is a serious issue that we must resolve; if not, we will forever be divided. It is okay to be passionate about our beliefs, however we cannot let them interfere with our relationships and respect for others.

I believe that in order to better our nation and become united, we must also recognize, acknowledge and understand our flaws. We need to understand that the United States is not a perfect country. Throughout 2020, the nation saw several issues such as racial inequality, political division, and COVID-19 come into light. Therefore, to achieve unity and become a better country, we must work together to resolve our issues. I believe that If we are united and connected, we can overcome any challenge.

Lastly, we continue to see day by day how divided we are as a nation. To achieve peace and unity, we must end the political polarization that so deeply divides us. With Inauguration Day behind us, we must try to become more accepting, understanding and respectful to those around us that have different beliefs. With respect, dignity, understanding, and acceptance, we will truly become a united nation.
