Staying Positive during Quarantine

For those in the Nutley Public Schools, quarantine, self-isolation and virtual learning started on March 16, 2020. These have been difficult times, and everyone is getting slight cabin fever. With over 111,1188 infections in New Jersey as of April 27, it's safer to stay inside. Despite this, it doesn’t make it easier.

Nutley High School has been reaching out to students and parents, reassuring them and giving updates on the situation. The school counselors have also been very supportive.

Staying active and keeping our minds busy is very important. “It’s important to get outside and breathe some fresh air so taking a walk or two daily has been my main form of exercise,” said Mrs. Tolve, a guidance counselor at NHS. Exercising is significant. Even if it's just doing a few pushups. It's important to go outside once in a while. Fresh air can do wonders, even if it's just opening a window.

It is also important to set a schedule. Having structure in these hard times is good for the psyche. Create a set time for everything. Go to sleep and wake up at the same time you normally would. By doing this, days can feel less hectic and crazy.

“What we avoid is watching too much of the news on TV. We get the updates and then I switch to the Food Network or whatever the kids want to watch. One thing that we don't avoid is family time. Since we're all home we can have family dinner again... no excuses!” said Mrs. Tolve.

It is important to have a positive mindset. Having conversations with family and friends can help keep spirits up. Just check up on them from time to time. If there are any older members of the family, send them a card, or set up a video call.

Right now, things seem pretty grim, but we have to remember that we are not alone. Staying inside is for not only our safety, but the safety of others as well. By staying inside, and washing our hands, we can help contain the virus’s spread.
