Late Nights and Long Dresses

New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art rolled out the red carpet for the Met Gala on May 7, 2018. This event is commonly known as the most fashionable night of year. The Met Gala is an event that welcomes celebrities and young creators. The invite-only event is also a fundraiser for the museum.This year's hosts were Rihanna, Amal Clooney, and Donatella Versace. Celebrities including Selena Gomez, Madonna, Katy Perry, and Kim Kardashian dressed to appropriately represent the theme of the event: “Heavenly Bodies:” Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.

They came dressed as saints, sinners, angels, even a female Pope, which made for some interesting fashion statements. Featuring high-end, expensive designers from Valentino and Versace to Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana, this event focused on fashion and religious art. For her very first Met Gala, Ariana Grande chose a Vera Wang gown with images from Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel. Although Kim Kardashian West was in attendance, in a Versace gold chainmail gown, husband Kanye sat this one out. In addition, while the theme of the gala was Heavenly Bodies and The Catholic Imagination, Kylie Jenner and her boyfriend, Travis, did not take the dress code too literally. She kept the accessories to a minimum, with a pair of Gentle Monster x Alexander Wang retro sunglasses and a few bangles.

For the past 23 years, Anna Wintour has served as co-chair of event, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. While on the red carpet, the Vogue editor-in-chief stopped to pose with her daughter,  Bee Shaffer (pictured.)

The cost of entry to this year’s affair was $30,000 per person, according to the New York Times. A-list celebrities can be offered up to $1 million to wear a designer’s jewelry. In addition, the cost to produce the Met Gala was $3.5 million, this year. Tables were sold for $275,000, but reached up to $500,000. Some celebrities attended the Met Gala for free if they are sitting at a table a brand paid for and are loaned dresses by fashion designers.

The first Met Gala took place in 1948. Last year's Met Gala, in 2017, highlighted the legendary Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo.
