Review of Peter Rabbit
Has anyone ever read The Tale of Benjamin Bunny? The Tale of Benjamin Bunny is a children’s book written and illustrated by Beatrix Potter and first published in September of 1904. This book is a sequel to The Tale of Peter Rabbit, written in 1902. The Tale of Benjamin Bunny is about Peter’s return to Mr. McGregor’s garden with his cousin, Benjamin, to retrieve the clothes he lost there during his previous adventure. Peter Rabbit is apprehensive about going back there, due to his past experience. If you have read The Tale of Benjamin Bunny, or The Tale of Peter Rabbit, the chances of you liking the movie Peter Rabbit are pretty high. They are very similar stories about rabbits who venture into Mr. McGregor’s vegetable garden and enjoy spending their days there, stealing his vegetables.
Peter Rabbit is a movie that is based on the children’s book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit and its sequel, The Tale of Benjamin Bunny. The movie was released on February 9, 2018.
Peter, his cousin, Benjamin, and his triplet sisters, Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton Tail, enjoy spending their days in Mr. McGregor’s vegetable garden, picking on him and stealing his vegetables. When one of Mr. McGregor’s relatives suddenly moved in, he was furious when he found out that a family of rabbits had been in his new home. He did everything he could to get rid of Peter Rabbit, who proved to be a resourceful rabbit and worthy opponent. One day, Peter accidentally left his jacket in Mr. McGregor’s garden and went back to retrieve it. Mr. McGregor noticed Peter and caught him, but Mr. McGregor suddenly passed away due to a heart attack.
Due to the death of the rabbits’ mother and father, a local woman named Bea took on a mother-like relationship with the rabbits. Bea was a friend of the rabbits and spent her time painting pictures of the rabbits as well as the surrounding nature.
Meanwhile in London, Mr. McGregor's nephew, Thomas McGregor, worked at the Harrod’s department store where he awaited a promotion. He was outraged about not getting a promotion and got fired. He coldly accepted the news about his uncle’s death. When he learned that his uncle’s house was valuable, he decided to renovate it so that he would be able to sell it and start his own store to rival Harrod’s. When Thomas got home, he kicked Peter and his friends out of the garden. Despite Bea’s objections, Thomas began to secretly wall up the garden. When Peter and Benjamin snuck back into the garden, Thomas caught the latter and attempted to drown Benjamin. Peter and the triplets rescued him and Thomas accidentally tossed the binoculars that Bea had given to him earlier.
Peter and Thomas began to fight with each other and started a war by setting up traps and other offensive annoyances. Peter was jealous and bent-out-of-shape when he discovered that Thomas and Bea had fallen in love. Because they ended up falling in love, Peter wanted to separate them even more out of jealousy. Peter made Bea angry when he unintentionally ruined her paintings during one excursion. Bea even turned on Thomas when his true colors and aggressive tendencies began to show. That all culminated when Thomas threw dynamite in Peter’s burrow, and used it to attack Peter in the garden. Thomas told Peter that his antics had caused him to become aggressive. “I am a good man. You’re the one that caused me to become a bad man,” said Thomas. When Peter blew up the dynamite to prove to Bea that Thomas was using it, he ended up knocking down the tree on top of the burrow, which crushed Bea’s art studio. Because Bea thought that Thomas was responsible for the detonation, Bea broke up with him. Thomas went back to London to work at Harrod’s again.
Peter felt bad for what he had done and wanted to make up for it. After learning that Bea intended to leave the neighborhood, Peter and Benjamin decided to head over to London to look for Thomas at Harrod’s. Once they found Thomas, they reconciled and rushed back to the country where Peter revealed that he was the one who activated the detonator. Peter and Thomas apologized to Bea for their fighting and commotion they had caused earlier. Unfortunately, Thomas discovered that he could not go home because a snobbish, arrogant couple had just bought the house. Thomas had an ugly encounter with them earlier. Peter and his friends used their tricks and kicked the couples out of the house. At the end of the movie, it was shown that Bea, Thomas, and the rabbits eventually moved to London together, where Thomas had his own toy shop and Bea began to write and illustrate books based on Peter and his friends.
As one can see, Peter Rabbit did a lot in the movie. There were also a lot of fun songs in the movie, such as “Feel it Still,” by Portugal the Man, “A- Punk,” by Vampire Weekend, “We No Speak Americano,” by Yolanda Be Cool, “Rather Be,” by Clean Bandit, “500 Miles,” by The Proclaimers, “Fight Song,” by Rachel Platten, “Flashdance, What a feeling,” by Irene Cara, “Roll Up,” by Fitz and the Tantrums, “Steal My Sunshine,” by Len, and many more.
If anyone wants to see Peter Rabbit in theaters, I would strongly encourage you do so because I can guarantee you that you will love it. I thought it was a funny, cute, and interesting movie.
